Inglorious Basterds

Finished Advert

Here is our finished advert, this was Worked on by Michal who pieced everything together in a way we thought would fit our ideas, such as matching the genre through use of imagery, colours and text. most members of our group have had previous experience working with photoshop and i hope this really shows in or advert and digipak.

Finished Digipak

Here are the front and back covers for our digipak as well as the spine for the case. we have tried to make this work fit in with the genre of pop punk.

Risk assessment

This is our risk assessment, there are so little risks as the idea is for the video to show Michal in his average life.

Costume and Props

For the music video, we would need to fit into the genre in which we would be making it for, in which is pop punk, so what we have avoided, was wearing clothing in which would be akin to sixth form uniform, as it would not fit/suit the genre in which we are doing, as we needed different clothing to suit it entirely.

Michals outfit:
The first things were mainly band shirts, each of the band shirt/shirts that we have/will be using are all well known within the pop punk genre, such as Green Day, in which we have followed that up with a grey Vans shirt, in which has been covered by a long sleeved red squared shirt, to make the pop punk style fit in further in which would match what is being shown within the genres. Moreover the reason why we have chosen this style of clothing is because they are well known cliches within the genre in which we are reinforcing, as the song is a parody of the genre, in which follows the cliches in which are involved.
Moreover, the other types of clothing in which we have selected were a set of dark jeans, and sneakers/skating shoes to match the top part of the outfit well.

Sam's outfit: For sam, we had to get him a outfit in which would be weird, and would not make any sense at all. The first thing was the blond wig, in which we have made him look like a woman/girl, so the first thing was to put makeup and a blonde wig on him. The next thing was the use of a dress, to make him more feminine, and to be able to make him more believable becoming the main character's love interest.

Before we have started recording our music video, we have bought some props in which we are going to use for the film. The first thing were props for michal, , the first thing was a beanie, in which he would be using within the video, to give him a more pop punk look.

The next things in which we needed to get were things in which would change his hair colour, in this case, hairspray, to give a temporary colour change, not a permanent hair dye, the two colours in which we have used was a red and a blue, this would allow his hair to have a different colour without resorting to dying his hair permanently.

Following that, the next things were for the other people, in this case it was mostly wigs, blonde wigs. In which we are going to use it on some people, as a segment for the music vid, in which the other main character will be using a blonde wig, as they will also be wearing a dress, so that they would be seen as a love interest.

The reason why we use these props, is because it will be able to allow us to differentiate from what we would normally do, as instead of going at it normally, we would be able to go out of control, and weird into the genre, so that we could be able to fit into the genre we are going to do our music video.

Constructing the Digipak

Here are some screen shots going through the stages of creating our digipak.
Two of the members i our group have used photoshop a lot in the past so we feel we can really show off in creating the digipak and advert.

Treatment

Treatment

Group roles:
Cinematography: Carly
Mise-en-scene: Carly and Michal
Editing: Joshua

Title:
A song about a girl

Synopsis:
A guy decided to fall in love with a girl, but he does not realise that this girl is a man in disguise, even all of his friends are shocked with the decision he has made, with maybe a hint of jealousy from some of the actual girls in the group.

Genre Conventions:
Pop Punk clothing is what the main singer Michal is wearing as well as the two guitarists so that they may fit into the genre.our video also includes "live"clips of the band performing, collections of different footage to make up the video, close ups of the singer, fast cut editing, humour and clips to make the video fun and show the cast having a good time.
The idea is to develop our work to the point of near professionalism so that you could play it and people wouldn't know that it was a piece of A2 coursework.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World

This Film is a good example of post modernism as it continuously reminds the viewer that it is a fictional text, and is very closely linked to video games in how it shows the battles between Scott and the "evil ex's" in the battle scenes the film displays  punches and kicks with on screen words

Audience Reception Theory

Audiences receive and respond to texts very differently, the different effects generate varied responses.
It is a way to categorise and group together different audience (consumer) interpretations.

Audience reception=way we react
 Stuart Hall 1973
Producers encode meaning/ideology into texts, which audiences decode
Audiences are active in their interpretations and can accept/reject the producers message.
Encode:meaning, ideology
Decode;understand, interpret
Texts can be decoded by body language to understand emotions/ relationships
They have multiple meanings and can be decoded in various ways. the messengers can mean something different to different people

Preferred reading- audiences agree and accept what the producers are encoding.
Negotiated reading- audiences partially agree with the decoded messages.
Oppositional reading- audiences reject/disagree or decode the text differently.

Developed by David Morley

Managers encode artists with specific ideology this is ultimately to increase financial gain.

Target audience will always have a preferred reading. They accept all messages and decode the text in the way it was intended.
usually the secondary audience will decode a negotiated reading.
Parents/audience who hate the music genre will have an oppositional reading.

Purpose of a music video

Promotional
Extension of income
Extension of outlets(music channel, direct dvd, CD sales)
Synergy

Promotional
Advertisement
Illustrates the song
Appeals to visual audience
Expresses an individuals emotions
Tells a story
markets an image
Creates a brand

A "successful" music video would be Michael Jacksons 'Thriller' in 2006 it was listed as the most successful music video by the guinness book of world records. in 2009 the video was inducted into the national film registry of the library of congress, the first music video ever to achieve this honour.

Another example would be Stan by Eminem

This is a rather extreme example, the 'protagonist' Stan wants nothing more than to be like his idol Eminem to the point of styling his hair the same way and disliking his own name.
he continues to write fan mail to Eminem though due to bad luck the mail never reaches his idol and it starts to drive Stan to the point of suicide and taking his partner with him.

"Hurt" by Johnny Cash is quite the emotional example as well.

Both Cash and his wife were in poor health at the time of filming and June Cash would pass away three months after filming with Johnny following seven months after filming.
the way he sings the lyrics lets you know that he knows his time is up which is what gives this song such an impact, making it possibly the saddest music video to exist.

A Model of Media

Text->Audience->Institutions->Text   a full circle

Text:Newspaper, magazine, music video, blog, social media Accounts, videos, TV programs, video games, films

Audience:- Consumers-How?, Why?, When?, What?, Who?, What happens?

Institutions:youtube, social media sites, google, disney, warner bros- Produce texts, Distribute texts, Exhibit texts, Market texts.

Audience to institutes: Monetary transactions.

Biggest issue nowadays is piracy of texts.
This means that producers will not be getting the money from consumers actively buying the texts so they must resort to lifting the price of those texts, for example go back thirty odd years and it cost next to nothing to see a live concert whereas now it can cost hundreds as those producers don't get the money they need/want for their products.

Michael Jackson

King of the Pop Video

Early videos with the jackson five such as "Rockin Robin" in 1971 the music video is actually very basic and just focuses on promoting the song with the dancing and costumes matching fashion at the time.

"Rock with you" the video focuses on Michael and his costume which is very hard to miss as it appears to be composed entirely of sequins. Like Rockin Robin the video is promoting the song and beginning to show Michael's own style such as his dancing.
Jackson's next big hit was Billie Jean in 1982
the beginning of the video doesn't even include Jackson, he has already sung a few lines before we actually see him in person, this video furthers his talent for dancing and his sense of style.

"Beat It" In 1983 is what really set of Jackson's career with his famous style of dance and costume. The video featured a lot of other dancers so the choreography must have taken a long time and multiple takes would have needed to be filmed.

Of course Michael Jackson's most famous song and video is "Thriller" it had a Budget of £500,000 when it was filmed in 1983 and quickly rose to top of the chart and since its release it has won many awards from best video album to viewers choice.

Case Study: Alex Southam

Freelances for OB management

To begin with he trained as a lawyer but decided to go in a new direction and work in film as he found being a lawyer to be uninteresting.
he began making music videos in an attempt to learn the trade.

In 2012 he joined Agile Films and he undertook all of the tasks for his music videos whilst working for them, however he now hires put others as the budget allows.

He likes the format of music videos as you can try new techniques and have real artistic freedom he is less keen on commercials as they have much less artistic freedom involved.

He showcases his videos on Vimeo as opposed to youtube as he feels it has a "Higher status".

His first breakthrough video was tesselate by Alt-J which had a budget of £10,000.

The people in this video have all been superimposed onto the background as the budget didn't allow for them to actually film on location and most of the effects were added post filming via editing software.

Another of his videos was Chase&Status- Lost and not found which had a budget of £50,000

He filmed this video in three takes and he filmed it slightly faster than usual and slowed it down in editing which gives it a smooth almost slow motion effect.

Sexism in pop music videos

Laura Mulvey's Male gaze: The male gaze occurs when the camera puts the audience into the perspective of a heterosexual man. It may linger over the curves of a woman's body, for instance. The woman is usually displayed on two different levels: as an erotic object for both the characters within the film and for the spectator who is watching the film. The man emerges as the dominant power within the created film fantasy. The woman is passive to the active gaze from the man. This adds an element of Patriarchal order, and it is often seen in "illusionistic narrative film".Mulvey argues that, in mainstream cinema, the male gaze typically takes precedence over the female gaze, reflecting an underlying power asymmetry.

Look at the song Blurred lines by Robin Thicke for example.
the song is talking about how ambiguous women can be perceived to be, he talks about her saying no but he continues to say that she really means yes.

The song is very simply about rape, whether or not it explicitly says so in the lyrics.

Often in music videos women are set up to portray objects of desire by being made to wear revealing clothing or perhaps even no clothes at all, this is so men are more likely to watch and buy the music.
